tongue paintings

on the tongue paintings

It's a consequence of being looked at - a response to the investigation of the gaze.  Child-like and sexual, the
tongue paintings reveal revulsion, humor and desire.

They are also a response to the myth of Medusa, usually depicted beheaded and sticking out her tongue.  The
sight of her was enough to turn men to stone.  In this way, she is a metaphor for a man confronting female sex-
uality, which literally stiffens him.

These paintings explore the idea of the male gorgon and a sexual response to being seen.
